Indeed, it was not at the point of the sword that we conquered the earth: and it was not the strength of our arm that brought about our salvation.
But it is your right, it is your arm, it is the goodness radiating from your face: because you have placed your complacency in us.
You are my King and my God: you alone have prepared and directed the numerous rescues of your people.
With you, as with a mighty horn, we will overthrow all our enemies and, by the power of your Name, we will be able to despise anyone who wishes to rise up against us.
For I do not trust in my bow, nor can my sword save me. It is you, on the contrary, who saves us from those who wish us harm which confounds those who hate us.
Every day we will rejoice in God: and sing His Name until the end of the age.
But unfortunately! now you reject us and cover us with confusion: you no longer want, Almighty God, to march with our armies.
You leave us dragged captive behind our enemies: and those who hate us can plunder us at will.
Here we are panting like sheep at the butcher’s stall; we are scattered throughout all nations.
You have sold your people for nothing: and in these exchanges which have been made of us there has been no profit.
We have become the shame of our neighbors: a subject of mockery and derision for those around us.
We are offered as an example among the nations: the peoples shake their heads in our eyes.
The heaviness of the days weighs this shame on me: and the confusion that reddens my face envelops me entirely, Each time I hear myself speaking against myself and insulting myself each time I see my enemy and my persecutor.
All these evils have melted upon us, and yet we have not forgotten you; and we have not acted wickedly against your covenant.
And our heart has not departed from you, neither have you turned our steps from your path.
Though thou hast humbled us in a place of affliction: and the shadow of death has overtaken us.
If we have forgotten the name of our God and contacted a foreign god,
Will God not call us to account? because it is he who knows what is most hidden in hearts.
Because of you, we are mortified every day that we are considered sheep to be slaughtered.
Get up, Lord, why do you seem to be sleeping? Stand up and don’t always push us away like this. Why do you turn your face away from us? why do you forget our misery and our tribulations?
For our soul is humbled in the dust: our stomach is stuck to the ground. Arise, Lord, come to our aid: and redeem us for the honor of your Name.
PSALM 73
The people of God and his Church are overwhelmed with evils: for God will one day come to their aid.
Why, O God, have you rejected us forever, and why has your fury been angry with the sheep of your pasture?
Remember your congregation that you have owned from the beginning.
You have redeemed the staff of your inheritance: Zion is the mountain on which you dwelt.
Lift up your hands against their pride forever: how much wickedness has the enemy committed in your sanctuary?
Those who hate you have shown their pride in the midst of your solemnity. They displayed their flags in large numbers.
And they did not understand what they were doing, at the top of the temple, as at the exit of a city.
As in a forest of trees, with blows they struck the doors together: with crashing blows and double-edged axes, they overturned it.
They have burned your sanctuary with fire, they have defiled the tabernacle of your name on earth.
They said in their hearts, they and all their allies together: Let us stand from the height of the earth every day of the feasts of God.
We no longer see our signs; there is no prophet and God will know us no more.
How long, O God, will the enemy despise?
Will our opponent always irritate your name!
Why do you turn away your hand and your right hand from your breast forever?
But God, our king for centuries, has brought about salvation in the midst of the earth.
It is you who with your power have strengthened the sea, broken the heads of dragons in the waters.
It was you who crushed the head of the dragon and gave it as food to the Ethiopian people.
It is you who caused springs and torrents to flow from the stone; you have dried up the rivers of Ethan.
For you is the day, and for you is the night: it is you who formed the dawn and the sun.
It is you who have drawn all the boundaries of the earth: in summer and spring you have created them.
Remember this: the enemy has reviled the LORD, and a foolish people have provoked your name.
Do not deliver to wild beasts the souls that do not praise you; and the souls of our poor, do not forget them forever.
Let’s look at your wedding ring; because those who are degraded on earth have been filled with houses of iniquity.
Let not the one who is humiliated be sent away in confusion; the poor and the destitute will praise your name.
Arise, O God, judge your cause: remember the insults that you receive, those that a fool does to you all day long.
Do not forget the clamor of your enemies: the pride of those who hate you always rises.
