CHAPTER 12 FROM THE BOOK OF ADAM
Kilaj’s speech in the world of Schelmaj, Fin.
In the name of sovereign life. Here are the precepts of the baptism of John. As this holy personage followed the banks of the Jordan, and conferred the baptism of living water, invoking the name of Life the angel of Life came to him and said to him: Arise, John, confer baptism on me whom you baptize, and pronounce on me the name you invoke. And John answered the angel of Life: My stomach on an empty stomach calls for food; my thirsty throat asks for a drink. I’m picking vegetables and my eyes are looking for a place to rest my head . Come tomorrow at dawn and I’ll baptize you.
Then the angel of Life rose, and raising his eyes to the living room of all splendor, to the dwelling of all light, he said with a great heart this prayer:
I beg you, O First Life, Second Life, Third Life, by Jufin and Lufafin, by Sam Mano Semiro, by the vine of all Life, and the tree of all salvation, by Usar Hai and Fetah-Hai, owner of the secrets of Life, principle of plants, of light, I beg you to answer my prayer: I implore you by this hour in which I am, by the twelve hours of the day, by the twelve hours of the night by the twenty -four hours embracing the day and the night, make that John, overwhelmed with weariness, succumbs to sleep, and that his body, while his dreaming numb soul, is possessed by the good and luminous spirit, so that when he will awaken, reiterating my request for baptism, I can maintain it.
Now, in the very moment that the angel of Life addressed this prayer, he started from the stay of all splendor, the stay of all light, of this place which was given to him above the twelve hours of the day and the twelve hours of the night. After the last hour, which ends the period of the day, begins the first hour of the night, and after the last hour, which ends the period of the night, starts again the first hour of the day. After evening comes in the morning, and after night, day. Now sleep and a deep numbness took possession of John’s limbs; his eyes closed and he fell asleep.
But as soon as he was awake and that, rubbing his eyes, he had chased this sleep, the angel of Life said to him: Peace be with you, Lord Jean Abo Zabo, Lord of glory! John answered him, Come without fear, my son, I will give you today without fail what I promised you yesterday.
Then the angel of Life: Arise, he said, go straight into the Jordan, extend your arm and pronounce on me, administering baptism, the name which your mouth celebrates. And John said to him, I spent forty-two years on the banks of the Jordan baptizing souls; but no one ever called me to the Jordan as you do However, my son, barely three years old, I want to go with you in the river.
And the angel of Life said to him, The baptism that you give, how do you administer it? John answered and said unto him, I send men into the Jordan, as a good shepherd does with his flock; and, raising my staff, I pronounce upon them the name of life. The angel of Life then said to John: The baptism that you administer and the name that you promise, from whom do they come?
Then all the disciples of John said at once to their master: Thirty-two years have you been bantant; but no one yet this little child has invited you to the edge of the Jordan; therefore take care that he does not treat your words with contempt.
However John, at the prayer of his disciples, got up, walked towards the Jordan, and, opening his arms to the angel of Life: Come, he said to him, come, O my child, aged to barely three years old, you are the youngest of your brothers, but you are taller than your fathers; you are small, but your precepts are very great. And the angel of Life went with John to the river!
When the Jordan saw the angel of Life with Jean, he started and flooded his banks to the right and to the left, so that Jean could not hold on. Then the angel of Life approached him; but, suddenly enlightened by the radiance and splendor of the angel of Life, Jean took a step back. But the angel of Life, approaching always, said to him: John, baptize me and pronounce on me the name which your mouth celebrates. And John answered him, I have plunged thousands of men into the Jordan and baptized myriads of souls, but I have never met a man like you.
